Residents of NSW 1885_ Volume 2 – Civil Service

This listing of residents of NSW is based on the published list of employees of the Civil Service as published in the Government Gazettes of NSW.

The Civil Service Board of NSW was required to publish a ‘CIVIL SERVICE LIST’ containing the names of all the Officers of each Division and Class and of all other person employed by the Civil Service.

Some Notes

  • In some cases, the entry only specifies the division or department and not the location or office.
  • In other cases, the entry only nominates the location and not the division or department
  • The actual listing contains the following sections.

‘Persons Temporarily Employed’;  ‘Educational Division. Teachers, Assistants and Pupil Teachers’ ; ‘Persons coming within provisions of Section 7 of the Act’ ; ‘Persons paid by salary and coming within the provisions of the 8th Section of the Act’; ‘Wages paid daily or monthly wages or paid by piecework’

  • Note that the following were excluded from this list:- Judges, University Professors or Wardens, teachers of the Sydney Grammar School, persons holding appointments in the Military or Naval Service , the Police and the Royal Mint.
