Parochial Districts and some notes.
‘Like all migrants, they arrived with spiritual and intellectual luggage, already acquired at home’ Anon cited in Campion, E. Australian Catholics.
These items have been sourced from the 1926 Almanac of the Diocese of Maitland. If you are researching or writing the history of your parish ask for more information.
The population of the Diocese of Maitland in 1926 was 215,500 of which 17.7% or 38,070 were Catholics. The largest Catholic parish was West Maitland, total population 12,600 with 29.36 % Catholics. This no doubt a product of the policy of the colonial government to move the ‘troublesome’ Irish to Maitland in the 19th Century.
